Face of Change Department
Omo River Gibe III Dam
What will the Gibe III dam soon do to alter this face and the nature/history painted on it?
Once the dam’s completed, the Omo River Valley with its many tribespeople will change from a network of rivers and tributaries feeding a pristine riparian forest to a business-controlled landscape done in by scheduled floods.
The life-web reliant on natural flow in this remotest of regions will change, along with it so will the selection of clays and patterns used and the outward social artistry of the people living in it.
Maybe one kind of progress-minded “poverty” will vanish — that of people without money — but it’s highly unlikely. Because of corruption, another poverty will completely replace it — that of people without a living history or livelihood.

My Travels in 2014 - March 31, Debark, Ethiopia
Ethiopian Street Life Scene: The Little Boy and His Goats
I see many children taking responsibility for various chores … fetching water, carrying firewood for cooking or looking after farm animals like cows, goats, sheep and donkeys.
Many kids shout Hello from afar when they see me, a foreigner, some come up and want to shake my hand, then ask for my name and sometimes where I am from, depending on their level of English …
I caught this little fellow with my long lens on my way to the Simien Mountains National Park office, he was quite busy with his small flock …

My Travels in 2014 - March 21, Adigrat, Ethiopia
Children of Adigrat I
Being more or less the only foreign face in the backstreets of Adigrat does get me more attention than I normally would want. I usually only take portrait shots of people in general but kids in particular if they ask me and I make it clear that there will be no money involved but these were just happy to be photographed and then look at a rather dark version of the photo on the back of my camera … this always gets them giggling and laughing. I also thought that the boy with that straw hat was quite a character.
